Does starting a new sketchbook give you the heebie-jeebies? Don't worry, you are not alone. Whether this is your first sketchbook or the fiftieth, most artists will experience anxiety around ruining a new book. I still experience it.

In this video, I share how I tackle a new sketchbook and how I try to overcome the fear of the first page.

I like to set the theme for the sketchbook with the first drawing and add my contact details in case my book gets lost. I also document a starting date to help me track my progress.

I try to avoid being precious with my sketchbook. There is no faster way to ruin the fun of a sketchbook than to take it too seriously. A sketchbook should be fun and experimental rather than worrying over every wrong brush stroke or line mark.

I try to take risks, even if it's something small, like trying a new medium and ruining my sketchbook with a messy drawing. Let's remember that growth happens after failure.
