Upside-Down Drawing: Tips to do this exercise

Did you know that flipping your reference image will change how you sketch? This method is called upside-down drawing and is known to improve the accuracy and realism of your artwork. This exercise forces artists to observe shapes and lines and draw what they see rather than preconceived concepts of what they think they see.

By turning an image upside-down, you disconnect from familiar images and symbols in your mind and focus on the angles, proportions and perspectives of what you see. This exercise improves an artist's observation skills drastically.

In this video, I try this exercise to see how it improves my observation skills. Once I have drawn my subject, I will turn around the drawing and compare it to the original.

I hope this video inspires you to try this drawing exercise. Let me know how it helps you.
